The Fresh Start August 10th, 2020 |
I wrote this with coaches in mind, but players: I hope you can learn the lesson too. Okay coach, so we’ve been in quarantine for months... Our teams haven’t played. We haven’t coached a game since basically 2019. We haven’t run a practice in who knows how long. And coach, maybe you’re nervous about starting up again… Do you have the same command over the gym? Can you remember the little things that made your practices run smoothly? Do you remember how to run your favorite drill and how long you should spend on it? Do you even remember how to write a practice plan? I can understand the nerves here, coach, but I have to say: I know you’ll be back to yourself in no time. But is “back to yourself” really where you want to be? Why not be better… Coach, after all this time off, EVERYBODY will be out of practice, and everybody will have to get their groove back. So if there was ever a time to do something new - something you’ve always wanted to try, but were too afraid to pull the trigger… that time is NOW. Coach, you have a FRESH START here and I hope you can seize that opportunity. Will you fall back into your old ways? Or will you evolve… Identify your new idea - X’s and O’s, a new drill, leadership and team bonding, or even you being more stern and running a tighter ship. Research it. Ask other people what they think, and how they would do it. But most of all: be WILLING to try it. And really give it a fair chance too - even if it doesn’t work at first, you can improve. Worst case, you just go back to what you used to do... Coach, I hope you’re lucky enough to get back in a gym soon. And if you do, I hope you’re wise enough to take some steps towards positive change. Even if it means struggles in the short term. We talk to our players about growth all the time…. And coach, now is the perfect time to live it ourselves. PH |
