The two ways to get better at volleyball ... February 25, 2020 |
We all want to get better at volleyball, but HOW are you going to get better? Many coaches talk about Process versus Results. Your Results involve what the ball did — ie.) if you set up your teammate properly, or if you scored the point. Your Process influences your chances of earning good Results. The theory here is that if you focus on the Process, successful Results will follow. Some coaches say to only focus on the Process, but I think BOTH matter. Here’s what I mean… If you think about your Results for each skill, there are TWO ways in which you can improve:
That’s it. Plain and simple. Your Results are either helping your team, or they are hurting your team. And if you analyze your most common style of Result, you can choose how to focus your Process more specifically. (*Notice how we are analyzing trends here…) On set-up plays (passing/defense, and setting), the goal is to deliver an easy ball that gives your teammate options. You get more consistent by eliminating un-playable misses, and below-average touches on routine plays. You get more aggressive by delivering the ball more perfectly to target. On point-scoring plays (serving, attacking), the goal is exactly that - to score a point, or to cause trouble if an earned point is unlikely. You get more consistent by avoiding errors (especially on bad sets!) — either don’t hit as hard, or finish your good top-spin contact. You get more aggressive by hitting harder, or hitting smarter targets. Now we haven’t given examples for each individual skill or situation, nor have we discussed the concept of good error versus bad error, but I’m sure you get the idea… There are so many ways to get better at volleyball, and thinking about your Results can help you figure out how to best focus on your Process.
